Die Gemeinde Kaprun liegt im Kapruner Tal, einem Seitental des Salzachtals in den Hohen Tauern im Bereich der Glocknergruppe. Teile des Gemeindegebietes liegen im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Am vergletscherten Talschluss finden sich einige Dreitausender: Kitzsteinhorn (3203 m), Großer Bärenkopf (3396 m), Klockerin (3425 m), Großes Wiesbachhorn (3564 m).
Gemeinsam mit der Gemeinde Zell am See bildet Kaprun die Tourismusregion Zell am See-Kaprun, die zu den bedeutendsten Tourismuszentren in Österreich zählt.
